Facilitator’s Guide

The Facilitator’s Guide is designed to provide a training facilitator with all the tools necessary to effectively conduct six Dientes Fuertes, Vida Sana (DFVS) training sessions with experienced promotoras. The Facilitator’s Guide provides step-by-step instructions, activities, and related training materials. A video series accompanies the sessions to reinforce the content and model tooth decay prevention outreach.

Session 1

Primary Teeth and Children's Health

In Session 1, facilitators will introduce the major goals and guidelines of Dientes Fuertes, Vida Sana, particularly the critical role of promotoras de salud in teaching their client families about the importance of dental health for children.

Promotoras de salud will learn why they should partner with parents to prevent primary tooth decay in children, how widespread primary tooth decay is among Latino children, why Latino children are at high risk for tooth decay, and basic tooth anatomy and plaque development.

Session 2

Tooth Decay and At-Home Prevention

In Session 2, facilitators will present key preventive dental health care measures that Latino parents can conduct at home with their children. Promotoras de salud will learn the causes of primary tooth decay, techniques to prevent primary tooth decay, and how to teach parents to use these techniques at home with their children.

Session 3

Connecting Parents to Dental Health Services and Information

In Session 3, promotoras de salud will practice their skills to find and evaluate tooth decay prevention information, locate community dental health resources, and teach parents how to navigate the dental health care system. Facilitators will also lead scenario-based learning on patient rights and barriers to accessing dental health services for children.

Session 4

Dental Visits and Follow-Up Care

In session 4, facilitators will discuss the importance of preventive dental visits and follow-up care. Session 4 also teaches promotoras de salud how to help parents make dental visits positive experiences for children and how to prevent and manage dental fear.

Session 5

Assessing Clients’ Dental Health Services and Information Needs

In Session 5, promotoras de salud will learn how to assess parents’ information needs about dental health and accessing dental health services for their children. Promotoras de salud will also learn how to identify and prioritize children’ dental health needs and develop an action plan based on their assessment and prioritization.

Session 6

Outreach Strategies

In Session 6, facilitators will develop promotoras’ de salud knowledge, skills, and confidence to conduct tooth decay prevention outreach to families with young children. Participants will practice conducting outreach during brief and extended contacts and incorporating tooth decay prevention messages into existing outreach efforts.
